1942. To church & S.S. 45 at S.S. We visited the men's class, Dr. Muehlmeier teaching "a fitting lesson for picnic day" - We went to Mendota for fine dinner, games, etc. Hot & windy, then a sprinkle K & F worked in eve at Sak's. Signe & I read in backyard. Wrote Hans & Hilda. 1943 Drove to Ashton for peas at vinery, but wasn't permitted to get any. Worked in garden. Hans drilled hole through stone wall for outside water outlet. Elaine & Delores practised their muffin demonstration. Marjorie brought up news I typed. 1944 K. went to Beltsville for interview. I drove in for Hans' suit at cleaners, took elec. fan for repairs, & worked 2 hrs. on 80 surg. dressings for W. Reed Hosp. Signe here for supper, inc. fresh roasting ears. K. quit at Hot Shoppe to be chemist. 1945. After 5:30 breakfast, Oskar took Frank and me to Buckhorn station nearly mssing bus. Change at Anamosa & Iowa City. To Leslie's before 9, surprising them. Dinner there, supper at George's. Slept at Leslie's. 57º 1946 We went 424 miles and at noon were 698 mi. from San Francisco and 4922 from Shanghai. Cloudy & chilly. Took walks, but got no more sunburned nose. Nap. Read in Henry Wallace's "Soviet Asia Mission".
