August 16 1942. Took Hans to bus at Genge's, for Washington. Took Juanita + Hazel to church. Finished reading "Tamarack." Wrote Miss Zillier, Bertha Steen, cards to Hazel J + Anna W 1943. Sent congratulation card + $5 check to Uncle Chris + bride- these marrying Skott's! Canned 4 pt. corn + lima beans in AM. 7 pt. corn in eve. Hans + Frank had late lunch- Frank did not work, because of swollen hand Marvin hit with baseball. Hans left for N, Wis. 1944. 98° at noon in Alex. Went to bank, then worked 2 hrs. at Red Cross. Too hot for anything but reading. Crocheted some edge on my tablecloth. Furniture finally arrived from Madison- 5 mo! tho on way only from July 20. K + I uncrated + set up table. 1945 Hans + I drove to Alex. Some groc. closed, also ration board. Hunted a trailer south of Alex + in Wash.- then decided not to get one after I saw Marjorie Byrnes Soc ed. of Wash. Post. Found no one else home in Wash- stores open in P.M. Began sorting out Hilda's things to take to Wis. 90° 1946. Awoke 4. "A Cheesebox" called for me at 6:30 + took me to ATC office at Broadway Mansions. There I learned Roger should have told me to wear slacks! What to do? Walked to Cathay Hotel, borrowed Viola Riley's. Big army truck of GI's to airport. Flew 660 miles to Peiping in 3 1/4 hours. Army truck to UNRRA. "Jim" Hunter gave me letter Hans wrote yesterday! Met Mr Hummel + Crane, other UNRRA men he knows.
