1942 To village for library board mtg. Foggy day, but I washed for Frank + Signe + myself. Baked bread. Had last peas from garden. Frank made a deal with Leslie Newell of Orfordville for 28 hives of bees on shares. Wrote Hans, Kathryn, Doris W 1943. Made chili sauce + tomato catsup from own tomatoes. Bad hour + half in mid P.M. so went to Dr Allen. Got gas tablets. Couldn't find Frank so walked home. Spent eve with Grace Kirkpatrick at Hadley's. 1944. We drove W's car to Middleton, called on the Rabe's- she just home from hospital. At our church packed K's winter things. Prof. John Barton came out to see Hans. Rain. Dinner at Zentner's, supper at Roberts'. Much talking - almost tiring! 1945. Finally got permit from Dane Co. Ration Board for new tire, + bought it at Zarndt's. Drove to Iowa. Stopped a while at Pauline's. The fixed us lunch. Admired rug they are making. Drove to Maynard; supper + overnight at Uncle Julius'. Walter Lillian, Virginia + children there. Fritz. Visited Virginia's new gift shop. 89.6° 1946. Sunned all of Hans' woolens, blankets, etc. on roof. Did quite a bit of washing, mostly for him. In P.M. he and I went by ricksha to Bei Hai. I took 6 Kodachromes, including the Dragon Wall there, gates etc. Visited in eve with the Carlsons, then with Mr. + Mrs. Axel Christensen - all fine people.
