1942. Canned 5 pt. tomatoes. 3 sweet apples + 5 Wealthy apples. baked cream cake. picked beans, cleaned up house. Kathryn sent telegram then came on last evening bus - we met both! Sig went with us. 1943. No church or S.S. Made 3 bouquets wrote Dora + Sig + Pauline. Hans typed all day. I read all of Nordhoff + Halls' "The Hurricane". 1944. Baked choc. chip cookies at Camilla's. To Moq. with Oskar to meet Frank on 5:30 bus, but he didn't come. Called on Mrs. Pendray. Walked from Camilla's sister's across pastures + creek to our old farm. Wilbur showed us contour corn fields - corn fine. Fine supper - Talked late. 1945. Kathryn hung out big washing I did. Cut out dark plaid gingham dress for Dora. Seamed up skirt. Hans typing in scrapbook. We took Kathryn to midnight train for Chicago. Supper at Whitson's. Joy home especially for the occasion. 66° 91° 1946 Hans and I went on 8 o'clock train to Tientsin, 2 1/2 hrs. To UNRRA office; met Jo blades, Dr. Roots, Mr. Howard, + others. Lunch at Press Club. Back to UNRRA for interview with Dr. Roots. Talk with Carol Deyoe, Agrehab. To see Ortha Lane, whom we found sick. Many rickshaw rides. We got 8 letters.
