September 1 1942. Kathryn began as chemist at Celon Co., Madison, riding in with Mr. Roberts + out on bus- by 7! I canned 6 pt. mixed veg. Took nap. Shower in P.M.- need more. Wrote 7 circle 1943. Made 2 1/2 qt. tomato catsup, canned 2 1/2 qt more peaches. baked bread and cookies + elderberry apple crisp. Wrote Sig. Worked on Rural Comments scrapbook. 1944. Up early. I helped get breakfast. Oskar took us to 6 o'clock bus- worst I ever rode on- at Buckhorn oil station. Got to Iowa City at 9. Saw Clara Ehlers, lunched with Zelma Z, Frank with Hazel. Bus to corner by Leslie's. Visit, nap, supper in their big dining room- at George's. Frank to 11 o'clock train- 3 hrs. late, so back to sleep- 1945. Hans + I went to Maquoketa, where we saw many we knew on street- Joe Dostal, Alfred Moore. Erv. McCutheon, Melba, Velma, Kathryn, + Siders'. Lunch with Wilbur + Amanda in a restaurant. Back to Olga's after call on Mrs. Pendray. 80.6 1946 Too hot to sleep well, but cloudy. George [Smorikoff?] took my trunk, then us to TiesnTsin station before 8. Rode with nurse Mary Layton, Salvation Army. JIm Hunter + Tom Skuce met us + took us back to Language School. Got picture of 4 of us, Frederic Wiener took. Nice to get back. Steady rain most of P.M. To bed early. Typed 2 letters.
