942 Juanita helped in forenoon. We moved studio couch, etc. waxed south bedroom floor and she washed K. woodwork. I baked cookies - fitted Sandra's dress, took nap, went to Middleton. Turned in 5 old tires. 1943 Walked to Rosenberg's for more cheese and butter for girls. To Oskar's a while. All but Velma's at grandma's for chicken dinner - 15. Frank shot pheasant - I dressed it. He went back to stay there all week. Rain in eve. Wrote R.C. 1944 Fine day. Hans' mother helped me wash - 2-1/2 lines full. I went to Canteen mtg in P.M. while she made surgical dressings. Election day - listened to radio till we were sure Roosevelt was re-elected. Wrote (7). Banks closed. 1945 Warmer; I walked to Lee Market without a coat. Ironed, cleaned, baked rolls, made a Danish dessert pie, fried chicken, etc. Mr. and Mrs. Peabody and "Winnie Winkle" here for dinner. Mrs. Norberg was here after they left. 1946 48 degrees, 55 degrees Getting hotter water, I washed Hans' things. Walked to Morrison St. Circle after tiffin. Bought a few pieces cloisonne in Tung An market. Mailed red slippers to Sara Ann Gerling and got some 5 cent air stamps, but PX was closed. Read in Olaf Stapleton's "Last and First Men".
