July 16 1948 Baked bread, ironed, SURPRISE! Bertha and John Goldsberry came about 11. After lunch we drove in to Madison in their new Oldsmobile. I stopped to see Owen, then came home on bus. 1949 Slept under feather beds at Maries. We walked to corner store, got stamps and June 20 LIFE and mailed letters. Marie downtown with us in PM for heavy suitcase. No duty to pay. Christine came for weekend. All 6 of us went to Fuluftshoj in eve to an operetta. (illegible) if I could understand it. 1950 Up early, breakfast for Jay and helper at 5:30, leave at 6 for Maq via Freeport, ILL. I drove 2 hrs. Much water in fields. At Amanda's discussion of Manfred. Dinner on terrace at Oskar's under umbrella, duck. To see Mother S. 5.4 inches rain in 24 hours. Home at 8. 1951 Rain an hr. or so in AM. Hans to office. I napped after breakfast! Washed 10 to 12. Took Mary Sholts "Peabody Sisters". Florence and Nora Leucke came. Mrs. Pierstorff there. Rode home with Ruth Clarke in her Nash Rambler. 1952 Awoke at 4.
