August 14 1948 Hans and I left Middleton at 5:30, drove to Kankakee, Ill. by noon where we had flat tire and lunch, then went to Bea's. On to Eaton, Ohio by 9:30, where we stayed over night at Cyrus Kiracofe's. Fine rest. 1949 Picnic in woods near Rotensee, 15 of us inc. Elfi's friend Alfred from E. Prussia now working for pittance in Hamburg and the Hirach's. We made Kartoffel salad, cheese and lettuce sandwiches, lemonade. First real summer weather. I wore nylon dress - first since July 5. We lazed in sun, then group sang "first time for more than 4 years". Took pics. Election day in Germany - saw Marie vote. 1950 I canned 4 qt and 4 pt. blueberries. Kathryn made blueberry pie. Hans at Siren to work. Took nap, crocheted and emb. Meals on porch supper by outdoor fireplace. 1951 Canned 3-1/2 qt. peaches, froze qt. Iochief corn. Sent Frank's shoes from Gath's to him. Nap. Rain in eve, but 9 here to Bazaar Comm mtg - Deone, E. Kromrey, Hallock, Moffitt, Salem, Hetzel, Lange, Solchenberger, Henderson. I sold Christmas cards and notes. 1952 To bed at 12:30 DST. Up 8:30 or so. Drove Frank's milk to main road. Saw milk truck, only vehicle off the place for 4 days. Peaceful and quiet. Nancy's father and mother, Harry and Hildegarde, came. Nancy and Hilda picked berries and made jelly. Hilda showed Kodachromes in eve.
