1917-1921 - 07-03

July 3
1917. As it did not frost, I uncovered the garden. After Hans had early breakfast to go out to Ole's with Lars. I slept till nine. I cleaned pantry shelves, and our new chiffonier. Thinned turnips, hoed beans. Hans came back after noon, and we set up the range and got supper on it. also put new Morris chair together he had made. More shower gifts: meat fork from Mildred Savage, tatted doily from Bertha Goldsberry, measuring spoons= Partha, & salt + pepper = Alma Bumstedt. I drove Ford to camp to get some things. 
1918. Letters from Mildred & mamma. I got washing done by 10:30. Baked war bread. Did mending. Hans and I went to Chautauqua in evening to hear DeJen magician, and Ges. E. Pearson, a survivor of the "Princess Pat" regiment, tell of his war experiences. Hot and windy and dusty.
1919. Dust laid by shower in evening. Ironed. Slept an hour & a half in A.M. as I've lost so much sleep lately. Finished letter to Sis.
1920. A rat bit Hilda's foot in night, scaring her & making it bleed all over. She was somewhat fretful. Had to wash out a lot of bloody sheets, etc. Baked 3 cherry pies & beans, mopped linoleum & porches. 
1921. Did up Sunday morning work for once as Minnie's sister stepped on nail, & she helped her today. Wrote three long-delayed "thank you" letters, to Cousin Emma, Emma Reno, & Hazel Grimes. We drove to Hamann's saw mill, then to folks to get ice cream.
