AUGUST 19 1917. Up at 5.15. Started at six to walk to the farm. Rode halfway in Buick with Ole Lee and Mrs. Nelson. Picked ten pickling cucumbers. Walked back. Went to church. Hans and I joined by letter. Communion day. Read and napped in P.M. Had first kohlrabis for dinner. 1918. Canned 1 qt. each red and yellow tomatoes, mixed vegetables, and beans, and 1 pt. okra. Had a great stew for dinner - 9 kinds of vegetables. Anna stopped here again on way back. Worked on my bedspread in P.M. on porch. While Hans' mother hemmed napkins for me. Spent evening at Peter Miller's. 1919. Spark-plug trouble kept me from getting my fair-sized washing out till after dinner. Worked on "Yutch's" costume and did some mending. August here in evening. 1920. Doing my own work is harder in some ways than having help, but really more satisfactory. Finished ironing, helped Hans make out M. W. & S.R. orders, and mailed them while Hilda slept, also letter to Sis, etc. In eve wrote to Uncle John & cards to August, mamma & H. Ehlers. 1921. We canned 3 qt. grape-apple jam, 2 qt. cabbage, and 2 qt. Kentucky Wonder beans and 1 pt watermelon pickles.
