August 23 1917. Rainy morning. I washed windows, and mopped south room upstairs and hall and made curtains for each, and started fitting up the room with bed, dresser, chairs, etc. Got announcement of birth of Ruth Eloise Scott. Hans got announcement of Floyd McCray's marriage. 1918. Letter from August, and card from Helena in Duluth. Took Mrs. Akeley's place at canning kitchen, but no one came in A.M. I canned 1 pt. vegetable orange (Hans got at Wm. Gunderson's) and 1 qt. yellow tomato preserves. Ironed and mended some. We and "Chesty's" went along Vermillion River west of town and got a few wild grapes. 1919. Failed to get a good start on day's work (killed my yeast in sponge, etc.) but got bread baked by 10 P.M. Washed for baby; engine went fine. Finished up petticoat. Pressed 2 pr. trousers, etc. Amanda finished at Tompkins', and came in. 1920. Canned 5 qt cabbage and beet relish, dried some corn, washed my hair. Hilda took her first ride in the Ford with no one to hold her, going with Hans to Elwood, etc. Card from Sis. Quite cool yet. 1921. Up at 6, and got 6 washerfuls all done soon after 11. Hilda put her new apron in sewing room in the dark, and upset oil can all over it.
