September 30 1917. Rev. Dale on vacation. We spent a very quiet Sunday. Went in swamp along R.R. track west of town and got cat tails. Wrote to papa! Had fist Swiss chard for dinner. Canned 1 pt. carrot pickles. 1918. Left Wilson's at 8:30. Cool, + cloudy till 2 o'clock. Built fire for hot lunch near Vinton. Drove last 50 miles from Marion in 2 min less than 2 hrs., getting to Skott's at 6:45, surprising them. August home from Minn. Silo fillers just finishing there. Cellar cut for new addition to house. 1919. Made all of Hilda's dress except the hem. Made a batch of catsup for immediate use. August in a few minutes at noon. Heavy rain in night. Hans stayed out in Garfield from last night there. 1920. Made first tomato catsup, 2 bottles. First frost of season, and chilly winds. Made 2 pt. and 2 glasses grape jam-from a whole bucketful. Made Hilda's new nightie, stitched with heavy blue thread. 19
