October 1 1917. Carita and Margaret came back at 1:00 A.M. No school because no water nor heat on. I canned 6 qts. of Swiss chard, in boiler- some job; also 1 qt. peaches. Supt. Anderson came back with his bride. 1918. Dark and showery forenoon. I crocheted most of edge of flaxon h'dk'f for Helen's birthday. Hans and I drove thru his folks' fields, around the block, and went to Efferding's- "Bill's place"- with a view of buying it someday. Otto Weidemann over to Skotts' in evening. 1919. First sunshine this week- quite warm in P.M. when we sat on porch. I did big washing for baby, and some curtains, finished Hilda's dress, put shortening tucks in her wool petticoats. Mrs. Peter Hesla called in P.M. Hans came home from Garfield, after two days there. 1920. Got my week's washing done at last. Baked pumpkin pies, then we had a picnic dinner in woods. Hilda took in a nap in the tent we put up, while I drove Jone on the sorghum cutter. We harvested our few squash and some potatoes. 1921. I was awake from 3:30 on. Routed out the others, finally got started, leaving Skott's before 7. Hans and his father went to Waterloo Dairy Show, Olga there to visit, and girlies and I stopped off at Sis' near Vinton. Surprised them, as they had given up seeing us.
