May 5 Had furnace fire all day to warm Hans' bedroom. 1936. Made Neufchatel cheese, dressed 3 hens, cooked 6; baked 2 cakes, mopped, took bath; want to Hinde's & Warton's. She gave me 4 big clumps of cannas. Drove to Pauline's & [Hogan's?] in A.M. for hens. 1937. Cold makes me utterly miserable. Baked bread. John finished painting living room woodwork ivory. I finished Hilda's red skirt for her to wear in play. 1938. Took girls to school, did necessary shopping, had auto radiator, etc. repaired; called on Emma, Mrs. Roberts, & on Mary Hadley in Madison Gen. hosp. with appendectomy a week ago. Tried for third time to find Mr. Bruce in Middleton. High wind, turned cold. First furnace fire this week. 1939. Like summer. Baked bread & do-nuts ironed my curtains & washed windows Went with Mrs Kelly & Zentner to Woman's Club in Madison (Rural Club guests) Fine dem. on flower arrangement.
