May 27 1936. Ate our meals in our cabin; tested pumps at Burr Oak (3 mi. from Minn) & Bluffton, seeing lots of bluffs, etc. All P.M. tested in Decorah. Tried to see Ice Cave. Called on Geo & Madge Donielson 1937 yr's sub. to Reader's Digest. Hilda graduates at head of class—$50 scholarship at Chillicothe. She got nightie from Helene, panties & brassier from Helen, necklace from Ehlers', silk hose from Edith Rand, chiffon hdkf from Bessie Briggs. Nicest Commencement we had seen at Epworth—Jrs. had lovely decorations, Mrs. [Pirie-Beyer?] gave fine speech. Helene sent Hilda telegram, Hans phoned from Vermilion, S.D. 1938. Took girls to school in Madison, then took Kathryn & 4 Middleton Hi girls to M.H.S. picnic at Waupun. We all went thru state prison & state hospital for insane. Picnic dinner in park. Home at 5, then hard rain storm. 1939. Baked raisin bread, finished K's dress. Hans home from Wakesha at noon. To Middleton in P.M. Madison in eve. Got tennis net & rackets & games begin. 19
