July 4 1936 Absolutely safe & sane– Signe and I alone all day. Read in "Mexican Odyssey" and crocheted on Signe's white hat. Hot. 1937. Hot in sun. We left at 8 for Buckhorn. At [farm?] an hour. 18 for fish & chicken dinner at Hans' folks—Olga's, us & Amanda & boys. At Frank Earle's. John E. has been sick 6 wks. Frankie went to [Orville's?] to help in haying. Home via gravel. 1938. Picked peas & raspberries for family of 5 today, with Elsie Kabler of Hillsboro whom Hilda brot out from Madison. We picnicked along Lake Mendota, drove around it. Kids had firecrackers in eve. Had our first new potatoes & cabbage from our garden. 91° 1939. Weak. Home all day. Read in Roy Chapman Andrews' "Trail of Ancient Man". Kids went swimming in A.M. Hilda & "Butch" Buckley to movie in P.M. Parry Dodds here at 7 for a bite then they went back to Ames. Frank had some fireworks on [lawn?]. Sent Dora peas & strawberries. 19
