AUGUST 8 Baked bread, cake and girls helped clean up house. All of Rileys and Mrs. Jensen came at 7 - their first visit to eastern Iowa in 8 years. 59 at S.S., 6 in my class. At church, too. Finished reading "Sod House Days" edited by Dr. John Ise, Vol IV of History of Am. Agriculture. Wrote Hans and 7. Did a huge washing which I couldn't hang out till noon on acc't of rain. [Illegible] made 3-1/2 qt. cuc. pickles. Kathryn came on bus from month at her grandma's. Washed and Hilda hang clothes. Baked blackberry pie and made applesauce from apples on trees we planted on farm. Went to Madison, Hans' mother getting her eyes fitted for glasses by Dr. M.E. Nesbit. We got Sig and saw "Union Pacific".
