OCTOBER 9 No schools (teachers at Teachers' Mtg). I took children, Norman M. and Irwin in to see President Roosevelt at Dubuque. Hans saw him at Oelwein. Huge crowd. Signe and I at Dyersville in P.M. in rain. Dem. mtg at city hall in eve. Rainy. Went to McFarland, then took Frank for guitar lesson at 10, got Kathryn a new coat, etc. Mended, made cookies; Hilda baked cake. Hans brought me 2 lovely "flocks" from Illinois. Kathryn has our combined S.S. class. I supplied in 3d grade. Took big bouquet [red?] and white dahlias. Explained L.A. calendar [illegible] S.S. Wrote Dora, Pauline and [Nellie?] Aitchison and Hans. Took Hans to see Dr. Ruff about his still swelled-up face. He took sick leave for today. Pressed his business suit, mended, baked bread. First furnace fire for more than a week.
