Heldt, Vick of Michigan, and Depler of Illinois were good centers but the Iowa center deserves the place. Heldt outplayed every man he met this year and his passing was excellent. He played a star game in the Illinois defeat and showed well in other conference battles. Vick, the Michigan center, is given the place on second team. Two Iowa men, Hunzelman of the University, and Wallace, a former Ames guard, now with the Gophers, are picked for guards. Hunzelman is a three year man who knows football and has his charge as his chief asset. He is no slouch in breaking through and throwing the runner for a loss. He has been handicapped by an injury to his shoulder which has kept him from showing at best. Wallace made state teams for two years and was a big factor in the strength of the Gopher forward wall. He has had three years and knows what is require of a guard. Leitch and Hanschman of Illinois are put on the second eleven. Many Candidates In choosing a set of backs the selection must be confined to placing the men of the winning team for the ground gainers, for nearly every top team had an extra supply of backs. Illinois had two sets of backs which plowed through every line they faced. They must be dealt with in picking backfield material. Ohio, Michigan, Northwestern, and Iowa teams all had fast men. Fletcher, the Illini pilot, must be given first call over the others for he runs his team well, sizes up the weak points in the enemy's defense quickly, and is good at returning punts. He has also forward passing ability. Underhill, the Purple general, showed class for a second team while Kelley, Knole of Michigan, and Wiper of Ohio, were clever quarters. A team-mate of Fletcher's seems to be the best bet for the left half for her was an important cog in the team play of Zuppke'e machine. He can hit the line, skirt the ends, and forward pass with accuracy and is a wonder on defensive play. He has been a heavy scorer, having the honor of going over for the first marker his team made in each game. Edgren of Northwestern showed himself as a finished player, starring in the Iowa game by his open field runs and forward passability. He runs the ends well, picks the holes, is an ideal man for interference and is no mediocre kicker. Donnelly and Scott, the Iowa halves, ranked with the best as ground gainers, defensive men, and forward pass specialists, but neither of these men can be classed as half backs as both are ideal fullbacks, most of their gains being made through the line. Rife, the Ohio flash, and Walquist, of Illinois are placed on the second team. Lohman or Steketee The one position that causes a hard problem is the fullback position. In Lohman and Steketee the team has two of the best line-plungers ever made in the West. Both are topnotchers in forward passing. In actual line smashing ability it is doubtful if the Michigan lad can compare with Lohman who has made more yardage than any other back in the conference. His gains may be attributed to the wonderful work of the Iowa tackles, Slater and Synhorst, who made it possible for this tank to drive through. In forward passing Lohman made a strong combination with Scott and Reed, many of the Hawkeye gains being due to the play of these three. Steketee is almost the equal of the Iowa full but his chief asset lies in his ability as a kicker and without this reliable toe artist the team is weak. The Wolverine player punted for 50 and 55 yards all season while his dropkicking won more than one game this season. In the Syracuse game, Steketee kicked three goals from placement and his gains were a vital factor in the victory. His showing in the victory. His showing in the Ohio game was good. If it were not for the fact the team would be without a kicker by placing Lohman, he could be given the place over his rival but there is no other capable kicker on the team. Steketee, therefore, must be landed on the first team. Other fullbacks are Kopp and Lanum of Illinois, Cohn of Michigan and Barr of the Badgers. A team composed of these players, experienced in inside play and in most cases captains, would be able to show most any defense up for this eleven. The line has the weight to withstand the fiercest of attacks while the backs are a set of players with ability in defensive play and in carrying the oval. Practically every lineman has seen two years of varsity football and some three. Good Forward Wall The forward wall would be shifty, quick to size up the opponents' plays. and on the watch for any fumbles that might prove to be the breaks of the game. Every one of the backs is fast, clever, and a good open field runner. This combination of backs is versed in the aerial game to the highest point of efficiency. The form each has displayed along lines of open play formations mark the quartet as one that could gain to an advantage of scoring touchdowns against any eleven.
