I have simply tried to do what seemed best each day as each day came."--Lincoln A NEW COURSE OFFERED At the beginning of next quarter, a new course will be offered to all University students. It is called “Courtesy.” The requirements are simple: Learn to do the kindest thing in the kindest way. No special department will teach the subject, no fees are charged, membership is unlimited. Every student should enroll in this course, as it will count on his degree in the end it. In the years to come he will be glad he registered for it. It is a simple thing after all. Take the course as outlined, starting December 31. Perform favors toward all with politeness. Do not be so narrow as to know the lessons of this course only in the class-room, but apply them to your work, at home, everywhere. Think it over during the Christmas vacation, and your future happiness will be increased if you schedule for “Courtesy” next quarter. FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH Day before yesterday was Friday the thirteenth, and the gloom spreaders were out “with bells on.” It was their big day. They had the best time they’ve known since the last time the thirteenth came on Friday. With the weather on their side, they had a glorious opportunity, and they made the best of it. As soon as they got out in the morning, they began reminding others of the date and giving them a poor start for their day’s work. They are as persistent as the “flu.” They did their works thoroughly, and started the superstition early in the morning. Isn’t it funny that so many intelligent people are actually afraid of the thirteenth? Usually, they won’t admit they’re superstitious, but try putting up an umbrella indoors and hear the intellectuals cry out. It always works. Many people refuse to sit at a table with thirteen, and some are horrified when a mirror is broken. All these things are in the same class with the superstition of Friday the thirteenth, but to change this state of affairs would be nearly as easy as changing a schedule in the University, after the close of registration. UNIVERSAL SERVICE One hundred per cent of the people are asked to enlist or to renew their enlistment in the support of the Red Cross.
