Page Four THE DAILY IOWAN STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Sunday, February 16, 1919 --------------------------- ENGLISH VIOLINIST WILL APPEAR HER THURSDAY EVEINING --- Isolde Menges Comes to University Through Music Council - To Play for Children --- STUDIED UNDER MASTERS --- Has Been Playing for Wounded Soldiers in London -- One of Half Dozen Stars --- Isolde Menges, English violinist, who will appear in concert under the auspices of the University music council at the natural science auditorium Thursday evening, Feb. 20, at 8:15, has played the violin practically all her life. In accordance with her hobby of playing before children, Miss Menges will give a free recital for all school children at the auditorium Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. She is deeply interested in the philosophy of education and believes that children should be given ample opportunity to develop a love for art. Studied in Russia When Miss Menges was three years and seven months old, she played six pieces from memory before an audience which filled the music room of her father's home in Brighton, England. She continued her studies with her father until she was twelve, when she became a pupil of Leon Sametimi, now of the Chicago Musical college. Four years later she went to Petrograd where she studied under Leopold Auer, the greatest of Russia's living violinists. Before coming to America, Miss Menges devoted much of her time to playing for wounded soldiers in the hospitals of London. During the two years that Miss Menges has toured the United States and Canada, she has had phenomenal success. Wins High Praise Dean Holmes Cowper of Des Moines declars that he has never heard a better violinist than Miss Menges and considers her as one of the half dozen greatest violinists in the world. In the Vancouver Province, Miss Menges was praised thus: "The unmistakable mark of genius is upon her. She was born for music and was born for the violin. Moreover she is a unique personality, one who is different from most young women. Miss Menges came through her program triumphantly. Perfect tune, absolute time, masterly phrasing and intense vigor were by turns exhibited to her astonished audience." Eilieen Beattie, Australian pianist will accompany Miss Menges in both her concerts here.. Reserved seats were put on sale at Ries' Iowa book store yesterday. ----- DEBATE QUESTIONS SELECTED Propositioins for inter-society debates have been selected by the men's forensic council at its last meeting. The subject for freshman debate is, Resolved; That the government should own and operate the interstate telephone and telegraph lines; constitutionality conceded." For sophomore debate, "Resolved; That immigration into the United States shall be prohibited, except in the case of Canadians and Cubans."
