I have simply tried to do what seemed best each day as each day came." --Lincoln. Night Editor: Kathryn Fritson TIME TO STOP There is always a possible danger of even a democratic government "going to seed" on prohibitory measures. During nearly every period of our legislative history has existed a super-abundance of state and national law-makers who have continually endeavored to impose their own religious or political convictions upon the people for whom they were legislating. Now and then our over-religious politicians become fanatical in their frantic efforts to compel all other men to trip a "straight and narrow" that conforms to the dimensions of their own. In like manner, as a result of the present world upheaval, many of our legislators are becoming obsessed with the idea that we (or they) must slap the lid down tightly on all political and industrial agitation that savors of radicalism in any respect, to keep our country from going to pieces. The Kimball bill, passed by the Iowa state senate a while ago, had behind it, the good intentions of preventing any violent outbreaks of bolshevism, and it was, no doubt, the unreasonable fear of the Russian terror that actuated the provision which labels the displayal of the red flag an act of treason. But is this not going a little too far? It might be good to remember that neither capital nor labor are losing sleep from fear that bolshevism will creep into this country and destroy it. Many prominent capitalists have expressed their confidence in American labor The bolshevists may all come from the laboring classes, but we must admit that without labor we could never have won the war; and that labor wlil do its share in the reconstruction. The red flag has been the proletariot's flag for years; it is not compatible with liberty to forbid a man from carrying a banner that represents his political convictions. During the war it was imperative to quiet agitation of every kind, as internal questions could not be allowed to overshadow the one big national problem. But now with the war over, we want no more restrictions on free speech than we had before the war. Whenever there is agitation, there is a cause for it, just or unjust. Stop the agitation and you bottle up a force which grows until it ultimately bursts its confines. This is what happened in despotic Russia.
