University armory 7:30 p.m. DORCAS IS Y. W. SPEAKER H.C. Dorcas will speak at the Y. W. C. A. meeting Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 in the liberal arts drawing room. His subject is “The Business of Being a Student.” There will be special music by the girls’ quartet. Tea will be served in the Y. W. C. A. parlor before the meeting. All University women are invited. GIRLS TRY OUT FOR CLASS BASKETBALL Competitors for places on the girl’s class basket ball teams try out every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon in the women’s gymnasium. Evelyn Bowen and Reva Meardon have been chosen captains of the senior and junior teams. Sophomore and freshman captains will be chosen soon and other players will be picked this week. Tryouts and games will be held the week before spring vacation. With more than fifty girls enrolling for basketball and an unusual willingness among them to practice and attend classes, Jeanne Lees, instructor in physical education for women, who has charge of practices, has been delighted by the spirit among the players. The large enrollment makes necessary three sections in place of two. More graduate women are out for basketball than in previous years. These enthusiasts and a few others [others] of the fifty-five who are not working for team places will continue to practice at the usual time while the teams will practice much oftener. EPISCOPAL STUDENTS ORGANIZE The Episcopal Students’ club was revived Thursday evening at a meeting of Episcopal students in the liberal arts drawing room. The following officers were elected: president, Willis Nutting; vice-president, Beatrice Gates; secretary, Lucile Everett; treasurer, Rodney F. Cobb. Frederick Cox, the former president, presided. Dr. Norris A. Brisco was also elected the [advisor] of the club. The next meeting will be announced later. Engineers entertained at a dancing party at the Majestic hall Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. L.G. Dreyer chaperoned. TALKS TO WOMAN’S CLUB Miss Lucille C. Franchere, instructor in the Romance language department, was a speaker of the afternoon as the Womans’ club in Cedar Rapids Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 25. Miss Franchere spoke on conditions in France before the war. The greater part of the hour was spent in picturing family life. LAMBDA THETA MEETS The March meeting of Lambda Theta will be held in the liberal arts drawing room Wednesday, March 5, from 5:45 to 7:45. The members are asked to bring the annual membership dues and also thirty-five cents for supper. Genevieve Holdridge was called to her home in Madison, S. Dak. Thursday. Lieut. Alvin D. Farrior, B.A. ‘17, is visiting friends at the University.
