Sunday, March 2, 1919 THE DAILY IOWAN STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PAGE FIVE THE SPIRIT OF IOWA There's a beacon light that's burning, Ever bec'ning of the hill, Throwing myriad shafts of learning O'er the emblem of our will. It fires the Red, it bathes the White, It casts the Blue in splendor, While fluttering each celestial night In righteous cause of grandeur. As sentinel on his midnight post, It guards the lapping waters Bound ever onward to the coast From banks of Alma Mater. It stands for hope, it stands for right, It has crowned both land and sea By men, who valor bids them fight, For Justice, Truth and Liberty. They left the silent winding stream, The green campus and the halls, The nooks and crooks of all serene To heed men's wailing calls: They gave their merry youth away With a loyalty divine In-born with "Iowa Fight" since days Of patient heart and mind. Glory in thought, glory in deed, A sanctuous glory in pride; Glory in God, glory in creed, A hostile glory defied: What of Cavell, a martyr true, Of Becker, Roland, and White, And other men whose glorious dues Have paid in the noble fight. Let not their spirit die in vain, But on their immortal dust Build monuments to bare the name Of those who bore the trust; Let not their Saintly Palace be The only Memorial hall, But build one on the rivers lea To commemorate their fall. Here, the song birds were the sweetest As they warbled to their mates; Here, the voices were the warmest As they echoed from their slates; Here, the lilacs bloomed in silence In the summer's purple glow; When they frolicked in the essence Of the dusks not long ago. Is the sunshine any brighter In the passing of the ways? Is the moon mist any softer Than the loves of former days? In the shadows of the evening Make the western heaven's glow With a radiance of meaning Since the days not long ago? One thousand stars, a Service flag, Sacred Gold ones with the blue To the honor of our comrades Who have quaffed the daisies' dew. Ah! 'Tis that loyalty of spirit Which was fostered and did grow In the heart of Alma Mater In the days not long ago. There's an old, old song that echoes On the far winds of the night; It floated above the war drums And the tumult of the fight. 'Tis the strains of Alma Mater Playing sweetly, soft and low, Like the harps of tripping fairies On mystic bars of Gold. To ye who kept the home fires burning, We would clink our glasses high, In true reverence of a yearning For the friends and old 'lumni: Stand! Salute! our royal banner With a love that shall not die; Till the taps shall sound up yonder, Let us honor Mother "I". There's a lane beyond tomorrow That will lead back home some day, Where the by-ways know no sorrow And the flowers and birds are gay; Where alumni hold a banquet, Where the Angels dance and sway To the strains of Alma Mater Like the days of yesterday.
