Saturday, May 17, 1919 THE DAILY IOWAN STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PAGE FIVE CORNELL CREW FAILS TO SCORE AGAINST HAWKEYES THURSDAY Twenty One Strikeouts Record Made by Hamilton--Iowa Star Pitcher CORNELL HITS TWO IN NINTH Improvement Noticed in Hawkeyes' Play Since Illinois Game Last Saturday A total of twenty-one strike-outs to his credit was the record made by Hamilton, Iowa pitcher, against Cornell Thursday afternoon when the Hawkeyes defeated the collegians by a score of 9 to 0. Hamilton had the Methodists helpless during every moment, and it was only after he had pitched no-hit baseball for eight innings that he eased up in the final frame and Cornell made two singles, their lone drives of the afternoon. The big Iowa hurler pitched great ball from the first to last. In the first inning he struck out four men, one runner being safe when Olson let a fast third strike get away from him. At no time, even in the ninth with two hits, did Cornell threaten to score. In four innings Hamilton retired every batter on strikes, and until the ninth inning only four men hit the ball into the field. He gave only two bases on balls and the runner was held at first base in both instances. Iowa Leads From Start Iowa got the jump on the game in the first inning. Captain Brown, first man up, hit for a single. Hamilton and McIlree also hit and a wild pitch, a hit batsman, and two bases on balls put Keppler up into the air with four runs scored and only two men down. With the bases full Harding was sent to the rescue and struck out Brown on the Iowa leader's second trip to the plate for that inning. Two hits in the sixth made another run and in the eighth the Hawkeyes took Harding's measure with four more tallies. Olson and Brown both rapped out triples, after which two errors, a base on balls, and a sacrifice fly by Crawford helped in the scoring. Considerable improvement in the play of the Hawkeye infield was noticeable since the Illinois game last Saturday, ten hits being amassed in all. Brown knocked out two singles and a triple in five trips to the plate, McIlree singled twice, and Olson hit for three bases and for one. Brown's triple to right field might have been a home run except that the ball hit a cinder pile and was stopped. Cornell Outfield Good The Cornell outfield showed up in fine form. The trio garnered in ten Iowa drives without a miscue, Sanderson and Kidder exhibiting some spectacular catches.
