STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Intercollegiate Athletics FIELD HOUSE IOWA CITY, IOWA Dear "I" Club Member: It is a very deep wish of mine to perpetuate the image and ideals of Nile Kinnick forever on this campus. Recently, more and more time has been spent answering indictments of an intercollegiate athletic program. I believe you, by virtue of the interest shown in our program, have adamantly held to the concept that an intercollegiate athletic program is wholesome and worthwhile. Due to your continued interest I would like to focus your attention on a matter which is very close to all of us at The State University of Iowa. This concerns the Nile Kinnick Scholarship Fund and its future. All of us had hoped that the original principal of the Nile Kinnick Scholarship Fund would provide sufficient interest to perpetuate the name of our top athlete in Iowa football history. We find that the principal has been reduced to the point where there is some danger of having to discontinue this scholarship. This former Heisman trophy winner, and Phi Beta Kappa student, exemplifies what we try to teach in our athletic program. We are extremely proud of his heritage here at The State University of Iowa and in the state of Iowa. He once wrote a friend, "Let us hope that you and I and many, many others like us will be enabled some day, some where, some how, to contribute in some small way to the peace and progress of the world. There is nothing wrong with dreams provided foundations are put under them. " This dream of Nile Kinnick's is still alive. It is up to us to provide his dreams with a foundation. Annually, five scholarships are granted deserving young men who most nearly emulate the qualities of Nile Kinnick. It has been necessary to drastically reduce the number of scholarships because of the lack of adequate funds. We want to be able to forever remind student athletes and lowans of the great objectives held by Nile Kinnick. If you wish to contribute in any amount to "The Nile Kinnick Scholarship Fund, State University of Iowa, " it will be an endorsement of the things in which Nile Kinnick believed. I am sure that the ideals of this unforgettable young man should be something all lowans will want to forever place as an example for future generations. Sincerely, Forest Evashevski Athletic Director
