friendship. We stopped in at Racines #1 across from the Jefferson for a glass of orange juice and a lot of conversation. Shortly before 3:30 he drove me down to the R.R. station so I could catch my train. I left Iowa City secretly happy over the manner in which she had welcomed me back. However, there were some things I saw or heard which saddened me. Dean Jones, my old filling station friend, heads the salvage drive for that area, and he says he is getting very little cooperation because the farmers and others are afraid the Jewish junk dealers will make some money. I sensed that the old jealousies and rivalries between the two banks, and between the different business houses were running deeper than ever.
