Aug 26th .1864. Our company is still on picket - No prospect of our being relieved - Seven Co.s. of the 7th. Illinois Calv. passed this morning enrout to Lagrange The other morning at the depot I saw some slaves who were as white as the caucassian race - What an awful curse slavery is to any land. Would that it was driven from our land - I think its day is about run - Cap [Ben Van Thursen?] went to town, we presume to see about when we will leave - I am anxious to get home and get into School I have not heard from Mary and Amanda for a month -
