Omaha, Nebraska May 4th, 1940 Dear SB: First, congratulations on the Phi Beta Kappa award, news of which was in to-day's press releases. Altho we knew that it would be coming in all probability, the report gave a distinct thrill, and perhaps a more satisfying one than even the Minnesota touchdowns; and that is saying much, very much. This adds the final touch, the diadem for the costume that all but complete and replete with the decorations of last winter. I dare aver that this will give you much genuine and lasting satisfaction, tho you perhaps will have the firm belief that with less interference your scholastic achievements would have been considerable above the bare necessities for qualification. But the capacity and the earnest desire are there just the same and will always be with you. The Baum letter is very enlightening and a rare epistle indeed. We are increasingly drawn to him, and will be most pleased for the opportunity to discuss the whole matter with you next week. We have the impression that you have not really met this man; that he saw you at the Philadelphia affair and was so impressed that he has been on your trail ever since. If he has a personallity that will wear well on constant association it might be very possible for you to thoroughly enjoy a connection there. But we will go into it when you come next Friday or Saturday. Also enclosed are some clippings that mother is sending which ought to be of interest to you. She is sending the same things to Ben. Have you kept copies of your correspondence with Baum. We would like to see them if they have been preserved. It would seem the matter of good judgment to make copies of your letters which deal on points which may be involved in any agreements. As previously noted, mother and I are going back to Adel on Sunday afternoon; she to attend an ETS affair in BM on Monday with plans to return to Omaha on Tuesday morning. George is holding the fort alone. I will attend to some persoanl business near DN and Adel on Monday, stay in DM that night and proceed to Ames for two days with other men from the FLB on Tuesday and Wednesday; home Wed. night. George will likely take the NW train for Ames on Thursday morning, to attend the Vieshea celebrations; possibly returning with Hober on Sat eve. Love Pop
