Johnson's reason for leaving Resaca was, the flank movement on the right which he had not expected. This whole affair from the time of our leaving Ringgold was a grand piece of work such as Sherman knows how to accomplish. 17th No reveille and the men told to fall in at 3 at the same time to get their knapsacks which had been brought up in the night. A general rush being made, many lost their knapsacks among them myself.
