21st Fighting in front all night In the morning the enemy open a battery on us, the first shell exploding within 8 feet of my tent, Killing one man of Co G. Another shell follows and wounds two men and the Regt is moved behind the hill, Rain Rain Col W- goes back to the Hospitl & our artillery getting in position Many men wounded 22" This morning our artillery opened and drew a fire of the the enemy's in the mountain A grand time ensues. The 38" catches all the high shells and lose several men. Our position tolerably secure. The 14" have to light out Lively lively times. When, crack, [Hum?], ping, they go over some bursting rather near where I write All day long the thing goes on "Old [Hoyere?]" and the Revolving Battery. At dark, fell in and moved half a mile to the right and took a position on the advance line in breastwork within 250 yds of the enemy. We [relieve?] a brigade of the 1st Div. 23 No man allowed to poke his head above the works. At 8 A M Capt Cahill is shot through the heart. Every man that looks like an
