2nd Some firing of Artillery during the evening Co came in. They found during the day that the enemy's [pitts?] for skirmishers were evacuated. Fighting in the night Things are evidently approaching a focus here (Col W- just [easing?] around,) 3d At daylight the enemys works are discovered to be evacuated and we get orders to move forthwith. The left began moving out last night At ten we started and reached the main road near Marietta at the College Building struck [west?] and after many stops made 5 miles coming to within 2 miles of the line. Hooker fought their rear closely and took prisoners. Their despondency The ladies of Marietta. Warm weather. They will make a stand this side the river, but their main works are south of it 7 1/2 mls from Atlanta. Camped in a thick wood. 1st Div in advance of corps. [? - code?] 4th were awakened by the Bands playing our National air, and at 10 moved out with only an order of "Right Face" and formed line in a large field a mile in front of the Rebel works, their rear having made a desperate stand Fighting all day, much artillery being used.
