through the enemys works. the 3d Brig in advance and one mile from the starting point the skirmishing began Our boys pushed their lines and after fighting over a most villainous country we came to half a mile of the river the The weather very hot. Many prisoners are taken and sent back. all glad to be taken. Are on the rail road, waiting orders to move. 6th Prisoners going to the rear all day. Picket fighting in the front and on the right heavy fighting. The 4" Corps on our left is the left of the line. Went on the mountain and saw Atlanta and the enemys works. The most splendid landscape scene imaginable. Saw the dead man hanging in a tree Officers attempting to get home with the men [recruits?] 7th In afternoon we moved to the left and laid out a camp. Quiet in front until dark when a 4 or 5 batteries opened and made night hideous for two hours. Expect to remain here 10 day 8th Laid out works and began on them. Quiet in front, & train came up the RR. Warm Warm Finished our works at noon 9 The picket line moved out but were held by the [Johnnies?] and driven back,
