The 17th lost some men At 3 PM we fell in and moved up to the skirmish line and began to fortify. Worked half the night and intend to finish in morning. Our Division lost heavily today especially in the 3d Brigade. The 1st Div lost many men. 10th Boys cheering in the enemy's works at sun up and work was immediately suspended, Lay still until 10 when moved out on the RR, and went south to the river and relieved Hazen's brig of 4th corps, they going up the river, We go in to camp. Boys go to the river swim out and exchange papers, trade coffee for tobacco &c. A good feeling exists between them At the cry "hunt your holes" they begin to shoot. But few shots from Artillery to day. 11th Very quiet all day. Pickets very friendly. Our corps is or seemed to be in single line for two miles along the river The planks are at work no doubt. Difficulty between officers increasing Gossett and Hamilton fight Hamilton put in arrest..
