I have been thinking considerable and I have been troubled to find a name to suit I thought I would try & get one that is not to common in the families & one that would not be likely to be "nicked" & I wish to give it as my opinion that nick names are commonly given at home first. - in the family. I have finally pitched upon this name, Emerson. not merely because it is the name of some particular distinguishe personage but be cause I like the name. However it is my captains name & it is none the worse for that. I hope all parties will be suited with the name if they are not I will give way & let an other & more suitable one be substituted. I hope you will write often and let me know how you get along at school &c &c. Remember me in your prayers. I remain Yours Ever, J H Mead (PS) I did not think about having this ink in my pen when I commenced to write with it, after underlining that name. J. M.
