8 Got off at 12 1/2 midnight, and and made a miserable night march, stopping at 5 oclock with orders to get breakfast and be ready to march at six. A dreary time and start off, many without [a?] breakfast. Halt after going two miles, and wait an hour then move on a couple of miles further and get dinner, While eating Wheeler pitched in to our rear quite saucily. Our boys gave him a warming and our Brig sent out on the line. He skirmished all afternoon with our men while we lay in line to cover the crossing of our (Vertically, at left:-) Drew 3/4 days rations the first since leaving & 8 miles
