N.Y. December 4th 1845 Well: Mary I Have commenced writing again to Ensure an Occasional communication and knowing You have a few of these 5 or 10 cent pieces You would as soon pay the out for postage on Letters as not; I am of Late frequently Demanding them. It is now five Days since I mailed my Last Letter and it will be 10 Days or possibly more before I Shall Hear from You & You may be assured the time will be Long; and would Seem Much Longer were it not I am quite Buisy During the Day Each Day; but when It comes Evening I cannot Amuse myself In any way not being able to Read - tis then I miss Your Company & the Little Ones However matters will pass pleasantly soon as I can Hear frequently from You and Know that You are all well and Enjoying Yourselves well. During the Day You Know Custom Has Habituated me to Solitude; so far as any cared for Society was concerned the Business of the day almost Exclusively occupying my thoughts; Except when John was Riding with His ____ well I Have many things to tell that I cannot spread on paper Very well and if we all Live and Have Health 2 or 3 months will soon Roll Round & when I start for Home You know it will not take Long to Yow. I Have been in the Dissecting Room most Every Day Except Sundays of course, occupying my time In that way to much Better advantage than in Reading when I can Read so small a portion of time. I Have written thus far this Evening - the Bells are now ringing the (Vertically from bottom left:-) alarm for fire but that is not an unfrequent occurrence in this place Night before Last I was writing a Letter to Father and while writing the Bells giving the alarm for fire were Ringing -- I should think fires occurred here as often as Every third night; but Do not Recollect as any Have occurred During the Daytime - the firemen with the Enjine are now passing
