[Vertically, at right-hand side of sheet:] I wrote to Butler to send me a Draft on His Commission Merchant in this City for from 40 to sixty Dollars. with what He will Have paid in on the Demands I Left in His Hands. by Requesting that I Do not Intend to spend more than is necessary to Enable Me to Get along. & shall probably bring some money Home with me - Surgical Instruments are Verry High & I shall only purchase such as will Enable Me to Get along Reasonably - I Did Intend to Bring You Home a Silk Dress and, Shawl which I will Do if You wish it & will trust me to purchase Them - or on my Return will Hand change to some of our Merchants - & in that way you can Have the privilege of making Your own choice & get an article Equally as cheap as I can buy it perhaps cheaper [Upside-down, at top of sheet:] An old saying is; that Enough is as good as a feast and if it be true; if this is not a feast it must be as good as one: for Sure there is Enough - You will commence cross Reading at pencil mark where is written with pencil Back reading - in Making prescriptions for Dr Beans Boy I failed to Reccommend You to Get a Bottle of Fahnestocks Vermifuge an give Him according to Directions on The Bottle; but I am in Hopes He will Not Need anything of that Kind.- I Should Have written Long Ere this if I Had Not Heard from Him Via of Father a few Days after Receiving Yours; He wrote the Day of His Return to Conneaut. will You Have The Frankness to acknowledge the Receipt of a Letter well filled; Even if I was part of 2 Years writing it. I shall not attend church untill Evening this Day shall mail this Letter to Day at 1/2 past 12. I was at the postoffice This Morning and Mailed a paper to Butler. Thinking He might get the Reading of Congress news & send it to You as soon as You would Get it otherwise it being Directly Sent to You - if You would prefer Having Them Sent Directly to You I would Do. so. I sent You a paper a few Days since containing a fine story Just Such as You Like to Read; but the paper was an old one; I would merely add that the time of My coming Home is Involved in some uncertainty; but I will come soon as I can for I want to be at Home & would be in a few Days were I not making permanent Surgical and anatomical advances - Yours A A.B..
