Saturday Jany 17th 46 Last Monday night The House In which I Board was Entered by a false Key & The Room adjoining mine Entered by Means of a pair of forceps which were passed into the Key hole the Key Seized & turned; the thief Took a pair of Pants that were Hanging on the post of the Bed containing about $40 in Money passed by the Bed to the Mantle Shelf & Took from that a gold watch and an Eyeglass: He Then Descended a flight of Stairs to the Barroom & Removed the money from the pocket of the pants & Took a Small amount of change from the Barr. Some Segars were Taken from the Barr & a pie or two, one pie was ate in the Barroom; The pants & Boots attached to Them were Left in the Barroom after the Valuables were Removed from Them; & this seems to be a favorable opportunity to give You a Verry faint, Idea, of what Viscious women will Tempt a Man to Do or Rather what it would seem they are accessary too; as a part of the Stolen property was found at a (public by night & private by Day) woman shop. which is across the Street & nearly opposite the Tavern from which the property & money was taken - Suspicion Rested Strongly on a young man that Had been Boarding in this House but Had Left But a few Days prior to the Theft. Day before Yesterday He was taken; in a House of Refreshment, Situated in The Same Block of Buildings In which He commited The Theft - He Delivered up the watch & part of the Money; & went to the woman Shop before alluded to & obtained the Eyeglass. probably part of the Money was also Left There. He Had His trial Yesterday and was Bound or Rather Examined & committed to the City prison to await his final trial; He confessed that He & His accomplices projected a plan of Entering a Store in an adjoining Block by a Back Route after Entering This Same Building & passing across an Entryway of about 9 or 10 feet in width which would give access to the Back windows of the Store; but there plans are frustrated & probably would Have been if He Had not been taken as the Door to the Tavern is at the present Time securely Bolted upon the Inside Tomorrow Night was the night fixed upon for accomplishing thare Scheme - it is getting quite Late & I will Close by Saying I am waiting Verry patiently for a Line from You was Mailed the 19th of December Last Year (upside-down, between lines of main letter:-) I would Here say Lest I Should be misunderstood or mis quoted that My opportunities for the Study of Anatomy prior to graduating were as good as at any country school - that there was not at the Time I graduated a bone or Mussle in the Human System with which, I was not familiar; but I find that the Elapse of time finds me a Little Dull on the Relative position of Some Bloodvessels - Even the Celebrated Doctor Mott says that He Even at this time notwithstanding His Vast Experience and age being about seventy: when He contemplates a formidable operation Refers to the Dead Body Before Hand to familiarize Himself; before placing in Jeopardy the Life of a fellow being - I suppose it would Have been Better if I Had omitted writing This untill I Heard from You and ascertained what was your success in Reading my formal Epistles as You Have two since I Have Heard from You but I can Read them when I come
