Frederick Maryland October 23 1862 Mrs A.A.B & the Children I Recd Your Kind Letter of 15th Instant; on the 20th. Glad to hear from Home at any time was quite, so before Receiving the first Communication was much Disappointed for several Days in succession, in not Recving Intelligence from Home - at last it came Explaining its own Delay. I am having very comfortable times at present plenty to Eat & business plenty; weather quite cool for a week or so particularly at night, air healthy Invigorating. I have been out of the city East & west The soil is quite productive composition Similar to that west of Cincinnati with the Limestone Strata Varying from Bare Rocks at about the Inclination of a house Roof; to a covering of Redish Soil Varying in debth from a few Inches to many feet. - I passed to my Sleeping apartment this & calculated to write; but thought I would Read a Little about Hospital Gangrene & as usual Stored some Valuable Information & Considerable Sound Sleep; neither of which has injured me any Saturday 25th This Day has been a buisy one careing for the Sick & not feeling quite well myself; Several new cases; billious Pneumonia & Jaundice; all the old cases are Improving. Threatened trouble, with Hospital Gangrene, is probably checked. Theodore & Morton Gould called on Me Last Night; Morton came in from the advanced position of the Army some 25 or 30 Miles from here after forage Hay & Grain arrived in time to Load his teams preparatory for an Early Departure in the Morning. they Extended to me an Invitation to Breakfast with them in camp this morning; but it being quite moist prevented: and Via I had another Invitation to Breakfast on chicken Stuffed & Baked by the wife of Doctor Heckel of Easton Pennsylvania which was accepted & a Splendid Breakfast it was coffee Chicken Bread, Soda Crackers & Cheese wanted good apple Sauce; had Some verry nice a few Days ago had some good Currant Sauce Last night - I am quite well today best of any time for 3 weeks Soda Crackers & Cheese are sound for the Sick instead of stronger food You will find 15 grs Tartarized Antimony inside the envelope
