This Sunday afternoon I attended church at the new Episcopal Church Hospital; Services by the Rev Mr Diehl a Lutheran Clergyman accompanied by His pet Singers after Services Closed I invited the Reverend Sir & the Singers to visit the Old Church; Mr Diehl Declined for want of time Singers accepted and Sang Several appropriate pieces which were Listened to with marked attention by The Soldier audience. It May Seem strange to you that I do not write oftener; but Every Day brings its Duties, though not Laborious at the present time: Just Enough to produce healthy Digestion provided the air was pure; Still I think the Impurities are not Destined to affect Me as Much Since the weather is becoming Cooler. The Rain has been falling most of the Day & now 8 Oclock P.M. while I am writing the Cavalry Bugle is Sounding and the Infantry fife is sending forth its peculiar musick & Drums are Ratling; for what cause I, know not: The Rain is also Steadily falling with Increased Rapidity - May be the Long Desired Rise in the Potomac is to be accomplished by this timely Rain - tis said that our Troops cannot safely leave the Potomac while the River is so low; fearing the Rebels may Cross at some one of the many fords & make a successful Raid into Maryland again Monday 2 Oclock P.M. Last night about 8 I was summoned below in this Hospital in Consultation; that together with Spasm of stomach & some other troubles with my own charge Detained me untill .2. oclock this morning; Every thing assumes a flattering appearance this morning .2. operations this forenoon by Doctor Bill Surgeon in charge of associated Hospitals No 3. - I shall write a few lines & forward in the course of this week. - this P.M. is Sunny & Windy cleared up about .9. A.M. Think the Boys had better close up there fall work Soon as practicable preparatory to ___ or whatever my seem to be for the best. I Think There will not be any Difficulty in getting a position for John Soon as He is Ready to accept of it & I Draw a Little Money - I am Better now than I have been for 3 weeks. I understand Sarah Gould is not improving - Verry Sorry - The Medical World are so Dull of comprehension as not to understand Her case - Give Little Mary about 2 grains of Ipecac & 3 or 4 of Supercarbonate of Soda; Dissolve in 12 Teaspoonfulls of [water?] [one?] teaspoonfull every hour & give a little Senna or Rhubarb. if Mary is Well I dont want Her made Sick by taking Medicine. - if She takes Medicine you must sweeten it - be careful & not give her too much.
