Sheffield Dec.27th. 1862 Dear Father: Agreeablely to your wishes when we parted at the Depot I went to Crawford Co. last Friday I should have gone sooner had it not been for my fall work which lasted as long as the roads were good. After the roads commenced to be muddy I thoughed it would be better to wait untill better going but for two months or more the roads have not been fit to put a team on to. I therefore waited as long as I though I could having laboured under the impression that the land had to be redeemed before the first of January 1863, I collected what I could here which was $10 borrowed $20 of J. L. Gage & $5 of S.T. Gage (the loan was a voluntary offer on their part) as the answer of the Treas. to my inquiry as to the am't required was $22.95 for the 60 acre piece & $12.37 for the 25 acres The Treas. told that land could be redeemed at any time within 2 years after sale But after going there I thoug it best to pay the thing up. Not hearing any thing from you in regard to it & that after repeated inquiries I took the responsibility to see to the business as best I could But allow me to state that had I known it could run that long I should not bother my self about it at present.
