Jany 19th 63 My Boy John V. Yours of 16 Inst was Recd To-Day quick time: The $10, had passed the Guards unmolested; I was officer of The Day Yesterday which occupied My Time Most of the Day and prevented My Going to the City, as My Duties Did not close untill 12 PM. Still my quarters afforded me Shelter most of the time after dark. I suppose 1/2 past 10 or 11, I took a Short walk found a Guard Just Relieved & took his word for all being Right Instead of Stumbling Round in The Dark. John. V. Bean I tell You This Soldiering is hard business Except with the favored Class not that president Lincoln or The Congress of The united States mean to have it So but in The Sub Officers Some of them is where The trouble Lies; and they become hardened & tyranical; Suspecting or Suspicious of all from The fact that so many Outlaws Drones Shirks truants and the Like are found to Deal with; the good ones are often treated Like Poor Fay - I have Delayed writing hoping I Might be able to Inform You Something More Definite as to My future stay in The Army - & I have been quite Out of health again for 2 Days coffee was too Strong for My Stomach I am Eating toast & Rabbitt & drink milk & water Jany 21st, 63. better again; Think I Should Like This camp Service well; a part of it is a little Like Your Coon Hunts Exciting; Mentally &c
