March 17th. 1863, I, Summons fortitude Enough to write a Little more This Evening - I am not well Enough to write much; not that I am any worse I would not have you think bu writing Requires Mental Effort & that outside of the profession, the Making up of Reports is The hardest work I have to do next to Eating My Meals That is the hardest work I have to attend to; tea & coffee too Strong & Everything out of order & Dirty - I Think there will be an opportunity of getting a Little Tin ware Soon & Then I will try & have Some clean Sauce & good Tea; at present Every Thing is hard Enough to hard Sensitive nostrils & good Eyesight - The Surgeon of this Regiment is a fine pleasant Easy Soul & if after a Little when I find who His pets are if there is not a Little More cleanliness I shall try to make a favorable Revolution - but Enough of this I have Seen hard fare before & always found a Remedy. I am in the 3d Brigade 9th Division. 13th army army corps - Maj General McLernand Commanding
