[1863] Steamer Rruth May 2d. Dear Children: I left Cairo last night just before dark came from the cars imediately on board. This is a new boat very large and ellegantly furnished; there are several ladies on the boat going down to see their husbands at Memphis, Corinth, and other places. One lady from Cincinnati, is going to Memphis to remain there; her husband is post surg ranks first Assts - she is very kind to me and may be of service to me after we get there. it is a beautiful morning I am siting on the deck with_ bonnet or shawl writing from on a music book. The woods are green and beautiful as mid- summer.
