Tuesday, April 4, 1865. Took an early breakfast with Mrs W - and Charlie followed by an early walk. After more than an hour of conference decided to go today. Hurried with my transportation papers and got off with not a moment to spare. Riding in the cars all afternoon & night, part of the time in the seat with a leader of a negro minstrel band then, a soldier & c Poor sleeping sitting up in a stiff seat. Such is life.
