Magnolia Hall July 5th My Dear Mother, Of course long ere this reaches thee you will have heard the glorious news - of the fall of V. Pemberton surrendered on the evening of the 3d and the next morning Grant with three Divisions entered the town - there were about 20,000 men in the place - all are to be paroled - the officers to keep their side arms - I wish it could have happened one day sooner so that the 4th might have been celebrated in right good earnest - but I think I see in my mind every one having a very good time if it is a Sunday - for of course the Telegraph has done its duty and you certainly are in possession of the news by this time - for Vicksburg has been ours for over 36 hours already.
