July, Monday 4, 1864 we took up line of march at 9 oclock this morning and march 12 miles on the Powder spring road we are making for the enamys left flank near the river.,this is the hardest fourth of July that I ever spent I think. the weather has ben very hot and sultry to day and we were not use to marchi[ng] so it went hard with us, we went in to Camp at 3 oclock this P.M. [? Set?] we are in hearing of the enamy July, Tuesday 5, 1864 near Chattahoochie river Ga we took up line of march at 8 oclock this morning in direction of the river to the enamy left flank we march [31?] miles to day. it has ben very hot to day I remember well one year ago to day we march out from Vicksburg. to Black river we lay in the reserve this evning & to night
