1846 January 1st The Province of yucatan declared her self independent of Mexico on the ground that the central government had violated the compact 1846 12 January The roof of a part of the coal mines in carbondale Pa. caved in and buried 50 or 60 persons of whom 16 were killed. 1846 January 11th The english army in [illegible] india under sir H. gough 20,000 strong fought a great battle with the sikhs 36,000 strong in which the latter were entirely defeated and driven across the [illegible] with the loss 10,000 killed and wounded British loss 2,383 including Maj. gen'l sir R. Dick. 1846 January 9th resolutions for terminating the joint occupation of orregon passed the U.S. House of representatives 163 to 54 1846 January 13th collision between steamers congress and saladin on the Mississippi congress destroyed and 15 persons drowned. 1846 [Jan?] 15th A severe gale on the Atlantic coast in which several vessels bound to new york were wrecked on squam beach, among them [illegible]
