Wednesday December 5th 1917 It was a bad cold day. I felt wretched with my my cold but kept at the knitting. Hattie worked all afternoon with sorting our red cross stamps returned not paid for and the checks sent for there kept. The kitchen was very cold. It is question if it can be used all winter. Thursday December 6th 1917 weather unpleasant but the girls all went to town in afternoon. I wrote Lydia in afternoon and kept busy with my knitting. Rob over awhile in evening. Friday December 7th 1917 Hattie got together some things for rummage sale for "The Home" in the morning ad Rob took her over about eleven oclock. I got some dinner for ourselves so Will went to Coralville at 12:45 to put a fire in the cellar. It is growing very cold. Hattie & Fannie went to town in the evening to a P E O meeting. Saturday December 8th 1917 It is bitter cold 13 below and did not get above zero all day. Hattie cleaned up the house some and had a lot of telephoning to do. jist at noon about done we saw Mr Teeters house was on fire. She went over there awhile. The fire men came but the house is about ruined. We managed to get the kitchen warm enough to get some supper. Mrs Helmich came on the afternoon train for a visit. The folks went down to the other house after supper. a letter from Lydia says [Martie?] is better. I wrote Aunt Emma a birthday letter. am knitting spare time.
